You are accepting an extra responsibility. Every small business is an entity. It has a personality and a measure of health. It will have relationships with clients, staff, government and neighbours. Your responsibility is to nurse the small business into growth and prosperity and in return you achieve a degree of comfort and personal growth.

In order to achieve growth and health of your new charge, you must ensure that you understand all aspects of small business. You must understand the existing systems and their strengths and weaknesses. These can be improved in time.

Your job is to guide and direct. This is a form of parental care. There is really little difference between raising a business and raising a child. They both call for understanding and patience. Just as a child lives in a family, a small business exists in an economy. The economy has moods and sometimes these are easy and pleasant, other times they are decidedly difficult.

Strangely, there is greater opportunity to be found during the difficult times. These are the times of greatest learning and a small business can only mature during the harder times. Just as a child learns from skinned knees, so a small business recovers from difficulty stronger than it was before the difficulty.

The lessons learned are translated into systems which define the personality and culture of the business. The marketing systems define the type of relationship with customers or clients. This is how the world sees the small business. Sales and marketing can be hard or soft sell, passive or active.

As the owner of a small business, you are really a carer. There are many who are reliant upon you. You are a source of income and security for staff; you are a source of goods or services for your client base. All of these people are looking to you for a form of support.

Small business is the largest employer in any country. Small business owners are really the parents of the world. Is that a job or what?
