Niche Keyword Research and Selection
Keyword Research Stages
Many people consider that keywords only have a use in SEO. Not true! Keyword analysis can reveal an enormous amount of information about a market. there are 3 distinct stages that a visitor steps through before becoming a customer. These are:
- Initial topic research
- Product research
- Buying
Each stage enters a different set of keywords into the search engine. The Initial Topic Research is general and is concerned with finding out about the topic in general. lets take the example of someone seeking an alternate power source for their beach house. "Am I interested in solar power, wind power or hydro power?" Once this initial stage is complete the searcher will be more informed about the different options available in his or her situation.
The next stage is where the searcher tries to identify which of the solar power products is best suited to his or her purpose, having narrowed the options to just one. He or she will now research the various manufacturers producing solar power panels. This search will narrow down to the needed power output and take into account things like the location, the wind load, the amount of cloud over the house in the seasons that it is used. Once this stage is complete, the searcher will know that they need one of the 2 options provided by company X
The last stage will use keywords very specific to the needs. They will often be using the name of the manufacturer, even the product names. They are now looking for a local supplier. They need to know things like how much does it cost?, Who is my local agent? Who can install it? What sort of warranty is available?
It is necessary to have a keyword presence for each stage of the search. This can capture customers and keep their interest throughout the whole exercise.
Market Size
The number and frequency of searches for a product range can be determined by the number of searches for a given keyword set. If a range of keywords is well sought after, it will show in the number of searches. The number of sites or pages responding to the search is shown on the search engine results page. The ideal situation is where a high number of searches are answered by a small number of sites. This market is untapped. If the opposite situation occurs, it will be harder to break into the market. Another place to look for confirmation is the numbers associated with advertising. Google Adwords is well documented and will provide price and search data for each keyword. The price data can be read to determine the supplier interest in the market and the click data the customer interest.
